Official Dodgers News: Los Angeles Dodgers Officially Reached Agreement To Sign Ex-World Series For $75 Million

Dodgers Eye as Alternative to Teoscar Hernández

With their pursuit of free-agent outfielder Teoscar Hernández at a standstill, the Los Angeles Dodgers, fresh off their World Series triumph, are exploring other right-handed hitting options. Among the intriguing possibilities is Chicago Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki.

The 30-year-old Suzuki had a stellar 2024 season, posting a .283/.366/.482 slash line with 21 home runs, 73 RBIs, and an .848 OPS. Despite his impressive performance, Suzuki’s role with the Cubs may be changing. With two years and $36 million remaining on his contract and a full no-trade clause, the Cubs might consider moving him, especially following the acquisition of Kyle Tucker.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic suggests that Suzuki could be relegated to designated hitter duties, with Tucker in right field, Pete Crow-Armstrong in center, and Ian Happ in left. Suzuki has reportedly expressed openness to a trade, given his preference not to play as a full-time DH.

Cubs President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer has been transparent with Suzuki and his representatives about the situation. “Jed has been very open about the interest from other teams,” said Suzuki’s agent, Joel Wolfe. “While he doesn’t want to trade Seiya, he’s shared which teams are in discussions, and Seiya has considered them.”

Wolfe also noted that Suzuki’s defensive prowess in Japan makes a transition to DH less appealing for the player.

The Cubs’ potential willingness to trade Suzuki marks a significant shift. General Manager Carter Hawkins emphasized the high bar for any trade involving a star like Suzuki. “We don’t want to trade Seiya,” Hawkins said. “But when teams inquire about great players, we’re open to discussions. That said, Suzuki fits our team exceptionally well.”

Meanwhile, the Dodgers are waiting for Hernández’s decision, which is expected to set the tone for their offseason moves. If Hernández opts elsewhere, Suzuki could become a prime target for Los Angeles, offering them a reliable bat and versatility in the lineup.
