Cardinals Strengthen Offensive Line Ahead of Rams Clash
The Arizona Cardinals have bolstered their practice squad with the signing of offensive lineman Matthew Jones, as officially announced today.
Jones, a 6-foot-3, 320-pound lineman, initially joined the Miami Dolphins in May as an undrafted free agent from Ohio State. Over five seasons (2019-2023) with the Buckeyes, he played in 53 games and started 29, earning All-Big Ten honors in 2022 and 2023. Notably, Jones was part of the team that competed in the 2020 College Football Playoff National Championship. He will wear jersey number 79 with the Cardinals.
This move follows a series of adjustments to Arizona’s offensive line. Paris Johnson Jr. and Jonah Williams were recently placed on injured reserve, ending their seasons. Additionally, the Cardinals elevated Jackson Barton from the practice squad to the active roster, while Charlie Heck was signed by the San Francisco 49ers from Arizona’s practice squad.
With just two weeks left in the regular season, the Cardinals’ offensive line has undergone significant changes compared to its initial lineup. Head coach Jonathan Gannon emphasized the importance of adapting and optimizing the team’s performance despite these challenges.
“We constantly evaluate if we’re putting our guys in the best position to succeed,” Gannon said. “It’s about coaching the details, executing the game plan, and maintaining winning behaviors daily. Everyone needs to operate at a high level to secure a win. While we haven’t done that well enough recently, we have another opportunity to improve this week.”
The Cardinals are set to face the Los Angeles Rams in Week 17, looking to make the most of their revamped roster.
