Astros GM Hints at Uncertain Future for Alex Bregman
Houston Astros fans may need to prepare for the possibility of parting ways with longtime All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman.
Recent reports revealed a significant gap between Bregman’s contract demands and the Astros’ offers, leaving negotiations at an impasse. As talks stalled, Houston began reshaping its infield. The team secured a three-year deal with first baseman Christian Walker and acquired All-Star third baseman Isaac Paredes in a trade that sent Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs. They were even linked to another All-Star third baseman following these moves.
Initially, Paredes’ arrival didn’t necessarily rule out Bregman’s return, as Paredes could have been slotted at first base. However, with Walker now anchoring that position, the Astros’ infield appears set.
Astros General Manager Dana Brown addressed the situation during Walker’s official introduction, signaling the team’s direction.
“Right now, I see Isaac Paredes at third base and Christian Walker at first base,” Brown told reporters, according to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome. “I won’t go into specifics, but I feel like negotiations [with Bregman] stalled. We made a very competitive offer and demonstrated our desire to keep him, but we had to explore other options. We couldn’t afford to wait.”
While Brown didn’t explicitly confirm the end of Bregman’s tenure with Houston, his remarks suggest the Astros are prepared to move forward without him if no agreement is reached.
Earlier this month, the Astros bid farewell to All-Star slugger Kyle Tucker, and losing Bregman could mark the end of an era for the team.
Bregman, 30, has spent his entire nine-year MLB career with the Astros, compiling a .272 batting average, 191 home runs, 663 RBIs, and an OPS of .848.
