Locked In Till 2028: Unexpected Outcome As Francisco Lindor happy Re-Signs A 4years With The…Read More

As the MLB offseason goes on, a popular brand among New York Mets fans has found a new home on Chicago’s South Side.

Robert Murray of FanSided broke the news of the deal on X first. Omar Narvaez, a former Mets free agency, was offered a minor league contract and invited to the Chicago White Sox’s Spring Training on Friday. The Mets released the 32-year-old catcher in June 2024 after designating him for assignment. He was in the second year of a $15 million, two-year deal.

After signing with New York on December 22, 2022, Narvaez served as Francisco Alvarez’s primary backup for the 2023 season as the Mets’ rookie starting catcher. In 49 games, Narvaez struggled both offensively and defensively, hitting just.211/.283/.297 with two home runs and seven RBI while allowing 46 stolen bases in 52 tries.

In an effort to improve on his disappointing 2023 season, Narvaez declined the opt-out clause in his contract and rejoined the Mets for 2024. However, during the first few months of the season, his play deteriorated. Narvaez hit a dismal.154/.191/.185, allowed 33 stolen bases in 35 attempts, and only mustered two extra-base hits and no home runs in 28 games. As a result, the Mets signed backup Luis Torrens on May 31; Narvaez was DFA’d that same day and fired five days later. Torrens would be Alvarez’ primary backup for the rest of the 2024 season.

Narvaez played with the White Sox from 2016 to 2018 when he first joined the league. He then spent 2019 with the Seattle Mariners before spending three years with the Milwaukee Brewers, where he was named an All-Star in 2021.

The seasoned backstop joins a White Sox team following a historically bad 2024 season in which they broke the modern-era record for defeats (which was previously held by the 1962 Mets). Narvaez is likely to be a seasoned depth acquisition after catchers Korey Lee and Matt Thais. The 32-year-old is likely to begin the season with the Triple-A Charlotte Knights unless he impresses his opponents during Spring Training.
