SAD NEWS: Outer Banks Hospital Dr. Qamar Ahmad MD Was Arrested For Murder

Outer Banks Health Opens State-of-the-Art Cancer Center

Outer Banks Health has officially opened the Carol S. and Edward D. Cowell Jr. Cancer Center, a cutting-edge 15,000-square-foot facility dedicated to cancer treatment and patient care. The center, which welcomed its first patients on January 29, 2024, is the result of a collaborative effort between Outer Banks Health, ECU Health, Chesapeake Regional Healthcare, and strong community support.

Years in the Making

The vision for the Cowell Cancer Center began in 2015, with the goal of establishing a state-of-the-art facility that would serve as a hub for cancer treatment in the Outer Banks region. The project was brought to life through the efforts of the Outer Banks Health Development Council, a group committed to enhancing healthcare services in the area.

“This momentous occasion marks the culmination of years of dedication, perseverance, and community support,” Outer Banks Health said in a statement.

A Comprehensive Cancer Care Team

The new center is led by radiation oncologist Dr. Charles Shelton and features a highly skilled team, including:

  • A director
  • Radiation therapists
  • Radiation nurses
  • Genetics extenders
  • Physicists and dosimetrists
  • Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians
  • LPNs, RNs, and lab technicians
  • Patient navigators and a social worker
  • A practice manager and patient access representatives

While a permanent medical oncologist is still being recruited, Dr. Michael Spiritos, formerly of Duke Health, and Dr. John Barton will serve in interim roles. Katie Caton, FNP, is also on staff as a permanent provider.

Nationally Recognized Cancer Care

Outer Banks Health Hospital is among the nation’s top critical access hospitals, with accreditation from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons—one of only eight such hospitals in the U.S. It is also the only critical access hospital in the country with an accredited breast program, reflecting its dedication to high-quality cancer care.

Expanding Access to Advanced Treatments

Outer Banks Health remains focused on expanding its services to better serve the evolving healthcare needs of the community. Through partnerships with healthcare organizations across North Carolina and Virginia, the hospital aims to ensure residents and visitors receive the best possible care without having to travel far.
