Vikings’ Cam Robinson Set for Lucrative Free Agency Deal
Offensive tackle Cam Robinson, who joined the Minnesota Vikings midway through the 2024 season, could leave after just 10 games as he prepares to test free agency. Originally a second-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Robinson has been a solid starting-caliber tackle throughout his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Now, the Alabama product is expected to receive a significant pay raise.
Robinson’s Market Value Soars
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, league executives believe Robinson could become one of the highest-paid tackles in the NFL. Fowler noted that Robinson has “quite possibly played his way above the $20-million-per-year threshold,” making him a sought-after free agent. The Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams are considered potential landing spots, while the Vikings could also attempt to retain him. A return to Jacksonville remains a possibility as well.
Potential Destinations
- Kansas City Chiefs: The Chiefs have a strong roster but need a reliable left tackle after the failed Donovan Smith experiment in 2023. With Wanya Morris and Kingsley Suamataia struggling in 2024, Robinson could provide stability while allowing Joe Thuney to return to his natural guard position.
- Los Angeles Rams: The Rams’ left tackle situation hinges on the status of impending free agent Alaric Jackson, who posted a solid 78.4 PFF grade in 2024. Despite Robinson’s lower 63.2 PFF grade, Fowler believes he could command a larger contract. If the Rams doubt Jackson’s ability to sustain his high level of play, they may opt for Robinson instead.
Minnesota’s Dilemma
The Vikings have over $58 million in projected cap space, giving them the flexibility to re-sign Robinson. However, they also need to address their quarterback situation. Sam Darnold, who played well in relief of rookie J.J. McCarthy, is set to hit free agency. If Minnesota uses the franchise tag to retain Darnold—projected to cost $39.6 million—it may be difficult to afford Robinson as well. The team could explore trading Darnold under the tag to free up cap space for Robinson.
Jacksonville Reunion?
The Jaguars initially didn’t want to trade Robinson but opted to move him rather than lose him for nothing in free agency. With a new front office led by offensive coordinator-turned-head coach Liam Coen, Jacksonville may look to bring Robinson back to protect Trevor Lawrence, especially if their top target, Ronnie Stanley, stays with the Ravens.
What’s Next?
With free agency approaching, Robinson is poised for a major payday. Whether he stays in Minnesota or lands with a new team, his market value suggests he will be one of the most sought-after tackles available.
