2025 Draft: Ex-GM Reveals Bold Moves He’d Make as Saints’ Mickey Loomis

NFL Draft 2025: Ex-GM Mike Tannenbaum’s Pick for the Saints

What will the New Orleans Saints do in the 2025 NFL Draft? More specifically, what moves will general manager Mickey Loomis make when it’s their turn on the clock? While few have been in his position, former NFL GM Mike Tannenbaum—who recently made draft selections for all 32 teams at ESPN—offered his take.

If he were in Loomis’ shoes, Tannenbaum would focus on strengthening a Saints defense that struggled last season, selecting Georgia Bulldogs standout Mykel Williams.

His reasoning:

“The Saints ranked 27th in defensive efficiency last season, and Cameron Jordan is nearing the end of his career. With tight salary cap space, New Orleans must think long-term. Despite offensive concerns, I’d prioritize improving the pass rush. Williams battled an ankle injury last season, but he’s got elite traits. Four of his five sacks came against Texas’ strong O-line. At 6-foot-5, he plays even bigger and stronger.”

Williams is a polarizing prospect in this draft class. Some project him as a top-10 pick, while others believe he could slide out of the first round. At 6-foot-5 and 260 pounds, he has NFL-ready size, but his 4.73-second 40-yard dash at Georgia’s pro day fell short of expectations. He also skipped key agility and jumping drills, leaving some scouts with questions.

Despite modest college production, Williams has significant upside. His ankle injury likely hindered him last season, but his raw talent is undeniable. Much like Cameron Jordan—who had just one sack as a rookie before becoming a dominant force—Williams could develop into a game-changing player if he reaches his potential.
