Breaking News: Braves Are So Apprehensive To have just tipped their hand after latest trade for backstop depth

Even though the Atlanta Braves had a dismal start to the season, baseball life goes on. The Braves’ general manager hasn’t slowed down on the transaction page, despite Alex Anthopoulos and the team receiving a lot of criticism following their awful first week of play. Atlanta returns home with a 0–7 record, making them the only team in baseball without a win, as you have already heard by now.

Braves may have just tipped their hand after latest trade for backstop depth

Alex Anthopoulos is doing everything in his power to turn the 2025 season around as soon as possible, even if his depression is at an all-time low. As he frequently does, Anthopoulos made another minor move yesterday to increase their organizational depth. This move, though, may have hinted at another move the front office will make in the upcoming weeks because it was made at a position that wasn’t particularly thought of as “lacking depth.”

The Braves and the Pittsburgh Pirates made a transaction Thursday night in which Atlanta handed money to Pittsburgh in return for catcher Jason Delay. Reynaldo Lopez was moved to the 60-day injured list to clear space on the 40-man roster. Delay was optioned to Double-A right away. Jesse Chavez, a veteran reliever, was also declared to have chosen free agency by the news.

The Braves would likely lose catcher Chadwick Tromp to a waiver claim in this scenario, so Delay is welcome organizational depth. Primary catcher Sean Murphy is nearing his return after starting a rehab assignment with Gwinnett earlier this week. Fans were wondering if the club would keep top prospect Drake Baldwin at the Major League level once Murphy returned, and acquiring Delay as catcher depth could signal that is indeed their plan.

Most people hoped that 2025 would be a season in which Murphy recovered impressively and Baldwin dominated Triple-A, but this season has already upended everything the Braves had anticipated. The team’s dismal start and Baldwin’s strong early-season at-bats appear to be sufficient for the front office to move forward with both catchers in Atlanta, and hopefully those two catchers can work together to lead this Braves offense to some better days. The Braves play their home opener tonight against NL East rival the Miami Marlins in the hopes of securing their first victory of the 2025 season.
