Steelers Eyeing $24M Running Back as Draft Nears
With the NFL Draft just around the corner, the Pittsburgh Steelers are evaluating multiple roster needs — and running back is high on the list. They’ve brought in nine running backs for pre-draft visits, signaling strong interest in bolstering the position. Currently, the team features Jaylen Warren and newly acquired Kenneth Gainwell, but another addition could still be on the table — either through the draft or a veteran trade.
According to Pro Football Network, one potential option could be Chicago Bears running back D’Andre Swift. A trade may not happen immediately but could unfold later in the offseason. PFN notes that despite Swift’s past connection with Bears head coach Ben Johnson from their time in Detroit, a fresh start might be beneficial for the 25-year-old back.
Swift had a down year in 2024, averaging just 3.8 yards per carry — the lowest of his career — and ranked near the bottom among high-volume running backs in rushing efficiency. He still has two years remaining on his three-year, $24 million contract, making post-June 1 a likely window for a potential trade. That timing would allow the Bears to save $8 million in cap space and incur only a small dead cap charge.
Last season, Swift nearly hit the 1,000-yard rushing mark with 959 yards and six touchdowns on 253 carries. He also added 42 receptions for 386 yards. By comparison, Warren recorded 511 yards and one touchdown, while Gainwell had 290 yards and one score during his time with the Eagles.
A trade for Swift could be a strategic move if the Steelers don’t find their ideal back in the draft.
