Lions’ Selection of Tyleik Williams Raises Eyebrows — But Could Pay Off Big
The Detroit Lions made a surprising move in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, opting to shore up their run defense by selecting Ohio State defensive tackle Tyleik Williams with the No. 28 overall pick, rather than adding a top-tier edge rusher to complement Aidan Hutchinson.
While Williams isn’t known for his pass-rushing prowess, fans shouldn’t be too quick to question the pick. Though his ability to disrupt the quarterback remains uncertain, Williams excels at stopping the run — something the Lions clearly prioritized.
For a team with championship aspirations, players who can excel in specific roles can be incredibly valuable. It wouldn’t be a shock if Williams ends the season as a starting defensive tackle next to Alim McNeill, proving doubters wrong.
Lions Find a Reliable Run Defender in Williams
At 320 pounds, Williams was among the best run-stoppers in college football last season. He’s a force in the trenches, able to plug gaps and bring down ball carriers, fitting the mold of the physical, tough defenders that Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes have favored in recent years.
His long-term ceiling will depend on how much he can develop as a pass rusher. If he never takes that step, he’ll still be a useful piece in a rotation. But if he does improve in that area, Williams has the potential to earn Pro Bowl consideration during his rookie contract.
Teaming up with McNeill and Hutchinson, Williams could help anchor one of the most formidable defensive fronts in the NFC. And with Detroit likely to continue building out its defense, this pick might turn out to be one of the steals of the draft.
