Rhys Walsh, Sunderland’s deadline-day acquisition from Glentoran, talks about his goals for his first squad
On the transfer deadline day, Sunderland secured the signings of three new players. While Romaine Mundle and Callum Styles drew significant attention, Glentoran winger Rhys Walsh was also added to the squad for an undisclosed fee.
Rhys Walsh had previously undergone a trial with Sunderland last summer, and despite receiving interest from other clubs, the decision was made to finalize his transfer now rather than waiting until the summer.
In an interview with the Belfast Telegraph, Walsh, who inked a two-and-a-half-year contract, revealed that he had also undergone a trial at Stoke City. However, he expressed a clear preference for joining Sunderland, stating that there was only one club he wanted to be a part of.
Last summer, I underwent a trial at Sunderland and had a great experience. We stayed in touch, and I was certain that I wanted to join the club.
On the deadline day, I managed to arrange a flight and officially signed with Sunderland. Despite also undergoing a trial at Stoke City, my preference was always Sunderland. While other clubs expressed interest, I had my heart set on joining this particular club, and they were equally eager to have me.
Completing the transfer within the window was a significant relief for me, and I fully grasp the magnitude of this opportunity. The process unfolded swiftly, and though I initially doubted it would happen, there was consistent communication between the clubs.
I received the phone call on the transfer deadline day, and we hastily arranged a flight at 8:00 pm, just before the window closed at 11:00 pm. It was a last-minute arrangement, but we managed to get everything in place in time.
Even at the age of 17, Walsh is already contemplating making a push to secure a spot in the first-team lineup.
The plan is to advance my career by aiming to play for the Under-21 side and eventually making my way into the first team. My goal is continuous improvement.
I’ve experienced a swift progression in my career, which is quite gratifying. Sharing the same agent as Trai Hume, we’ve discussed the move, and I’m hopeful to emulate his success. Notably, Dan Ballard and Corry Evans at Sunderland are doing exceptionally well.
Observing players like Conor Bradley and Callum Marshall, who showcase Northern Ireland’s top talent on a global stage, is inspiring. I believe I’ll adapt seamlessly; having already made the transition to the Glentoran first team, I’ll approach Sunderland with a similar confidence and belief.
