According to Daniel Popper of The Athletic, the Los Angeles Chargers’ new head coach Jim Harbaugh is bringing back former quarterbacks coach Shane Day, who was the Bolts’ quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator from 2021-2022.
Day will return with Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, whom he tutored for two seasons before leaving to become the Houston Texans’ senior offensive assistant in 2023. Day was Herbert’s quarterback coach for two of his best seasons as a player, including in 2021, when Herbert threw for 5,014 yards and 38 touchdowns while earning his only player Bowl bid.

He also coached Herbert in 2022, when he made his only career playoff appearance. Day’s return will hopefully bring some reassurance to Herbert, who is once again working with a new coaching staff and offensive coordinator.
Herbert will now work under his third head coach, Jim Harbaugh, and his fourth NFL offensive coordinator, Greg Roman. In addition, Day has vast expertise as a quarterback coach and NFL offensive assistant coach. He has previously served as quarterbacks coach for the San Francisco 49ers, Connecticut, and Chicago Bears. He has previously worked as a tight ends coach for the Miami Dolphins and an offensive quality control coach for Michigan and the 49ers.
Day also differs from several of Harbaugh’s other staff choices in that he has never worked under Harbaugh before, unlike defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, offensive coordinator Greg Roman, and strength coach Ben Herbert. However, the changeup could be beneficial because Day will bring a new perspective and expertise to the offensive staff.
