A CFL star has agreed to a reserve/futures contract with the Lions. According to Justin Dunk of 3DownNation, Mathieu Betts, a defensive lineman, has signed a futures contract with Detroit. The deal has been verified by Detroit Free Press reporter Dave Birkett.
While playing with the BC Lions last season, Betts was named the league’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player. In the end, he recorded 44 tackles, three forced fumbles, and 18 sacks—the most of any player born in Canada in CFL history.
Including a time with Edmonton, the 28-year-old defensive lineman has played in the CFL for the last four seasons. Throughout his professional career, he has amassed 27 sacks, the most of which have occurred in the last two years.
In the 2019 draft, the Laval University product was left undrafted. Although he was one of Chicago’s final cuts, he made an impression on the Bears during the preseason.
