This off-season, Michigan formally declared Steve Casula’s appointment and his return to the team as the tight ends coach.
The Wolverines are in the running for some of the best tight ends in the country, including Linkon Cure, a 2025 four-star prospect from Goodland, Kansas.
With the departure of the entire defensive staff from the team this off-season, Michigan has seen a great deal of upheaval. Sherrone Moore, the first-year head coach, has been hard at work building his staff. One of the anticipated major splashes he’s made is pulling Brian Jean-Mary away from Tennessee to take over as the defensive run game coordinator and linebacker coach for the Wolverines.
While in Knoxville, Jean-Mary had a lot of solid recruiting contacts, one of which being Elijah Melendez, a Miami commit and four-star linebacker from Kissimmee, Florida’s Osceola 2025.
In college football, the quarterback position is the most crucial on the field. A number of institutions, including certain national title contenders, will begin spring practice with undetermined contests before the 2024 season. Due to their caliber of performance, all four of the starting quarterbacks in the College Football Playoff last season were either awarded team MVPs for their respective institutions or Heisman candidates.
Many quarterback signings have occurred in college football’s transfer portal-rich offseason; some are seen as QB1, while others are seen as depth players. We’ll do our best to go over a handful of those below, along with information on scenarios where starters will be selected in the 2024 NFL Draft.
After spring camp concludes, another gateway window will open, which may increase the allure of a position of interest before playoff expansion and the super-conference era that will start in a few months.
Here’s a look at seven quarterback scenarios that are somewhat unknown going into spring camp, based on information from team insiders and our current understanding:
LaNorris Sellers, a redshirt freshman who made some huge plays in spot duty last fall behind Spencer Rattler, has the coaching staff at South Carolina very enthused. The lack of body behind Sellers was the Gamecocks’ main problem going into the offseason. For that reason, Shane Beamer and his staff went to the portal to recruit two players, Ashford and Oklahoma’s Davis Beville, along with Dante Reno, a 2024 freshman signee. Luke Doty, a wideout, spent three seasons as a quarterback at Columbia before switching to receiver full-time last autumn. Before spring training, Beamer stated that there is “increased competition” at quarterback with this scheme.
It’s also well known that Beamer declined to guarantee a starting position to some of the better possibilities he had on campus during recruiting visits in December, prior to the Gamecocks gaining two quarterback transfers. Excitement surrounds Sellers, who will have a brief window of opportunity as the Gamecocks’ starting quarterback. Given Ashford’s skill set, the degree to which the Auburn transfer’s running abilities will mesh with Dowell Loggains’ scheme, and the addition of Shawn Elliott to the team recently—who like zone-read, downhill quarterback calls—this is still a position struggle to watch. In 2024, there should be a new look unit with a position for both Ashford and Sellers.
In December, Will Rogers departed Mississippi State to take over as Washington’s next elite passer after Michael Penix Jr. went to Alabama. However, Rogers then declared himself open once more. With Arizona’s Jedd Fisch taking over as coach, he’s sticking put. However, he’ll have competition this spring from two other recent additions to the 2024 recruiting class: Williams, who first signed with the Wildcats before switching to the Huskies, and Davis, who initially signed with Washington in December but ultimately chose to remain. Since Rodgers was a standout in the SEC’s Air Raid before Mississippi State switched to a catastrophic pro-style offense last year, one would think that he is Fisch’s first pick, but Williams and Davis are all talented players.
Following the AJ Swann and Ken Seals transfer portal exits, which left the Commodores without any starting experience going into 2024, Clark Lea made a few acquisitions of his own. Diego Pavia of New Mexico State ran for 928 yards and seven additional touchdowns last season while completing 60.4% of his throws for 2,973 yards and 26 touchdowns against nine interceptions, according to Vandy247. Johnson of Utah will square off against him for top billing. Johnson, who has three seasons left of eligibility, moved to Nashville one month before Pavia. If Johnson stays at the position, the program’s future will be in his hands. Meanwhile, Pavia, who has one more season remaining on his contract, is the team’s 2024 starter for a squad coming off a An unsuccessful SEC campaign.
