According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the New Orleans Saints have adjusted quarterback Derek Carr’s deal in an effort to bring the team closer to adhering to the wage cap in the league. The Saints should benefit from a $23 million salary cap reduction as a result of the trade.
Carr was scheduled to earn a $30 million base salary this season after agreeing to a four-year, $150 million contract with the Saints in March. In an attempt to come closer to cap compliance by the March 13 deadline, the team decided to turn it into a signing bonus.
But according to Spotrac on X, this move raises Carr’s dead cap charge to $50 million in 2025, making it harder to break up with him later on.
With 3,878 yards, 25 touchdowns, and eight interceptions at season’s end, the 32-year-old quarterback led the Saints to a 9-8 record.
They were tied for first place in the division, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, their nemesis, won the playoff tiebreaker.
The Saints, who are still $40 million above the salary cap, won’t be stopping here. In the upcoming weeks, anticipate further contract reconstructions and potential releases.
