Callum Styles, a midfielder for Sunderland, has opened out about his convoluted January trade and the “gutting” issue that nearly caused it to fail.
According to Callum Styles, Tony Mowbray was eager to sign him and the team had been following him “for a few windows.”
Styles signed a one-year loan agreement with the Black Cats on deadline day, but everyone anticipates that it will become permanent in the summer.
The midfielder was worried that his move to the northeast would be derailed since he had to wait for his debut after having appendix surgery.
He is content that Sunderland, whose interest appears to have been rather long-standing, has finally accepted him, though.
“The interest has been around for a few windows and the old manager Mowbray wanted me in, then Michael Beale wanted me in,” Styles explained.
“It just happened in January, and I immediately thought that I would want to play at the best level possible for a squad our size.
“The surgery was unexpected, so of course I wasn’t prepared for it, but the most important thing is that we got it across the line.
“I immediately assumed that I was done for the season when I learned that I would need surgery. I knew very little about it.
“It was heartbreaking, especially because a team like Sunderland wanted me, but the important thing is that it worked out, and I’m thrilled to be here with this team.
The surgeon then predicted that he would return in six to eight weeks, and he did so in four.
