Just In: Newcastle now in to hijack 27-year-old midfield machine

Midfielder Sean Longstaff from Newcastle United has responded to his younger brother Matty Longstaff’s transfer to Toronto FC in the MLS Eastern Conference. Matty, who is three years junior to Sean, was released by Newcastle United last summer.

In a message directed to X, Sean conveyed, “Best wishes in the @MLS, @mattylobby48! Just a friendly reminder to go easy on the maple syrup!”

 

Longstaff had been training with the Canadian team for approximately two weeks before the club officially confirmed his signing on Thursday afternoon. Reflecting on his brother’s departure from their childhood club last summer, Sean Longstaff shared with BBC Radio Newcastle, “It’s obviously quite sad, really. When the news broke, it was sad, but it’s football, and he’ll eventually get where he’s going to be.

“He’s a top-notch player, and people saw that when he did play. We’ve played football together in the same team pretty much since we were nine years old, so we’ve had a pretty good run at it. I still speak to him all the time, and he’ll be supporting me, and I’ll be supporting him.

“The club has been great with him. They’ve done everything they can. They’re going to get him back fully fit so he can go out and kick on again. I’m really grateful for that, and I know he is as well. It’s something that was going to happen eventually.”
