Just In: Mike Dodds explains Sunderland's attacking dilemma

Hemir, who hadn’t started a game since the beginning of the season, took the lead for 66 minutes in the recent match against Norwich City. He was then substituted by Nazariy Rusyn. The 20-year-old has faced challenges in his debut season at Sunderland, having only made two starts and 15 appearances as a substitute, despite the team’s ongoing struggles to score goals.

Hemir has faced challenges adjusting to the Championship after transitioning from Benfica’s reserve ranks, but recent improvements on the training ground convinced Dodds to include him in the starting lineup at Carrow Road.

Sunderland’s interim head coach acknowledged Hemir’s dedicated efforts, emphasizing that players committed to the club on the training pitch will be given opportunities. Dodds recognized the disparity in playing styles between Benfica and Sunderland and highlighted the need for Hemir to adapt his mentality and playing approach. Despite initial difficulties, Dodds expressed confidence in Hemir’s ability to meet the team’s demands.

Reflecting on their conversations about match loads and tactical adjustments, Dodds credited Hemir’s positive attitude and determination to succeed at Sunderland. Dodds noted the importance of Hemir prioritizing certain aspects of play before focusing on his preferred style.

The decision on whether Hemir continues in the starting lineup for the upcoming home game against Leicester City remains uncertain. Dodds might consider starting with other options like Rusyn or Burstow as central strikers, or even exploring formations without a traditional number nine, potentially featuring Bellingham or Ba in a leading role.

Hemir secured his place in the lineup against Norwich due to his superior hold-up play, although Sunderland struggled to create numerous scoring opportunities with him leading the attack.

Explaining the decision, Dodds mentioned a slight alteration in their in-possession strategy for the Norwich game. He believed that having a focal point in the game to play off and onto was essential, leading to the choice of Hemir.

Dodds assessed Hemir’s performance as satisfactory, noting that the player could have benefited from more service. While acknowledging room for improvement in the team’s quality, especially in the first 15 minutes, Dodds observed that once they settled into the game, there were moments of comfortable possession without inflicting significant damage on the opposition. The decision to go with Hemir was influenced by the need for a focal point in their tactical setup.
