Already, as Newcastle United looks to the summer window, transfer rumors have begun.
Eddie Howe has advised Newcastle United supporters to exercise caution regarding transfer rumors involving goalkeepers until the end of the season. Despite the Magpies’ focus on securing European qualification in their remaining seven matches, speculation persists about potential signings, both outfield and in goal, for the upcoming summer transfer window.
Howe faces decisions regarding his goalkeeping options in the coming months, particularly with Nick Pope set to reclaim the number one spot at Newcastle soon. However, there’s uncertainty behind Pope, with Martin Dubravka performing capably in recent months but not seen as a long-term solution at 35 years old. Dubravka’s agent hinted at seeking a new challenge after the European Championships this summer.
Meanwhile, backup Loris Karius is expected to depart when his contract expires, and Mark Gillespie has yet to feature prominently for the first team. Consequently, Newcastle’s links to various goalkeepers come as no surprise.
Speculation persists about Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale, who lost his starting position to David Raya, while Mikel Arteta’s recent comments suggest Ramsdale’s future at Arsenal remains uncertain.
In addition to Ramsdale, there’s talk of a move for Valencia’s promising goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, and Bayern Munich’s Alexander Nubel, currently on loan at Stuttgart, has emerged as a candidate. Newcastle is also reportedly interested in Middlesbrough’s Seny Dieng.
However, Howe remains cautious regarding his forthcoming transfer strategies, downplaying the speculation surrounding potential signings when questioned about it over the weekend.
“I’m not entirely sure about the players we’ve been linked with,” remarked the Newcastle manager to reporters. “Lee [Marshall] does bring up a few names, and some are unfamiliar to me. I wouldn’t give too much weight to that.”
The primary focus this summer will likely be retaining key Newcastle players, as speculation continues regarding the futures of Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes. Howe has reiterated his desire to retain both standout players at St James’ Park amid interest from overseas clubs.
