A grand jury in Union Parish, Louisiana, has decided not to pursue an attempted second-degree murder charge against LSU running back Trey Holly. Instead, Holly faces one felony count of illegal use of a weapon or dangerous instrumentality, as reported by The Advocate on Friday. Holly surrendered to authorities in Farmerville, Louisiana, in February, following one of three arrests related to a shooting incident that left two people injured. Initially, he was also charged with aggravated criminal damage to property. LSU suspended him indefinitely from all team activities, and his status remains unchanged.
In a statement released on Friday, Holly’s attorney, Mike Small, asserted that Holly will plead not guilty to the weapons charge. Small expressed confidence in Holly’s innocence, stating his anticipation of a fair trial before an impartial jury in Union Parish.
In a February 17 Instagram post, the 19-year-old Holly claimed innocence, stating he was at home during the incident. He voluntarily turned himself in upon learning of an arrest warrant, aiming to fully cooperate with authorities. Holly vehemently denied any involvement in the incident, asserting that he has been wrongly accused.
Holly, a highly regarded recruit in LSU’s 2023 class from Union Parish High School, set a state record with 10,523 rushing yards and 160 touchdowns. Standing at 5 feet 7 inches and weighing 192 pounds, Holly appeared in three games for LSU in 2023, rushing for 110 yards and scoring a touchdown on 11 carries. His impressive debut against Army on October 21 earned him recognition as the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, after running for 91 yards, including a 67-yard touchdown.
