Report: Los Angeles Rams key star now in for OTAs Despite Contract Issues

Matthew Stafford, the quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams, wants a larger guaranteed salary under his deal. This has been observed over the off-season on several occasions.

That was further enhanced by the record-breaking contract extension that former Rams quarterback Jared Goff signed with the Detroit Lions earlier in May.

Goff signed a four-year, $212 million contract extension on May 13, making him the second highest-paid player in the NFL, just behind Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals.

With the quarterback market constantly changing, it’s understandable that Stafford would want a better deal. He is currently playing under a four-year, $160 million contract that lasts until the 2026 season, with an average salary of $40 million, placing him 12th among quarterbacks, alongside Daniel Jones of the New York Giants.

Considering his standing, Stafford appears to be underpaid. Despite this, he chose to join the Rams for the start of their OTAs on Monday.

The Rams announced on social media that their starting quarterback was on the field on Monday during practice.

Matthew Stafford

This is significant given the contract impasse between the Super Bowl-winning quarterback and his team. Stafford could have chosen to sit out this week to pressure the Rams, but he didn’t.

Matthew Stafford’s 2023 stats: 3,965 passing yards, 92.5 QB rating, 62.6% completion rate, 24-11 TD-INT ratio, and 7.6 yards per attempt.

Any new contract for Stafford would likely start at $50 million per year. Speculatively, a three-year deal worth $150 million with $100 million guaranteed might be the starting point.

Now, it’s about Stafford and the Rams negotiating a new deal before training camp. If they can’t reach an agreement, Stafford might reconsider and hold out, which no one wants to see.
