The Golden State Warriors have the option to sign Stephen Curry to a one-year, $62.6 million extension this offseason, according to NBA reporter Tim Kawakami of The Athletic. Curry, widely regarded as the greatest shooter in NBA history, previously inked a four-year, $215 million extension with the Warriors in August 2021. This deal ensures he will earn $55.8 million next season and $59.6 million in the 2025-26 season.
Currently, Curry is poised to become an unrestricted free agent in the 2026 offseason. Warriors owner Joe Lacob addressed the extension possibilities, stating, “We have not discussed it. He’s busy right now and he should stay busy and focused on that with the Olympics. But if he wants to talk about that, that’s up to him. He’s not said that at all, but if he wants to, we’ll certainly entertain that discussion. … Let’s put it this way, Steph Curry I fully anticipate he’ll be a Warrior for life. I thought Klay was going to be, too, but I was wrong.”
Lacob praised Curry’s contributions to the franchise, expressing the team’s desire to retain him for as long as he wishes to play at a high level. Lacob compared Curry’s longevity to NFL legend Tom Brady, noting Curry’s excellent physical condition.
The Warriors missed the playoffs in 2024 after losing the 9-10 play-in tournament game to the Sacramento Kings. Despite the team’s struggles, Curry had an impressive season, playing in 74 games and averaging 26.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.1 assists. He shot 45.0% from the field, 40.8% from three-point range, and 92.3% from the free-throw line.
Drafted by the Warriors with the seventh overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, Curry will turn 37 next season. His career averages stand at 24.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 6.4 assists per game. Over his illustrious career, Curry has won four championships, two MVP awards, one Finals MVP, and two scoring titles.
The Warriors face a new challenge after losing Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks in free agency this offseason. Curry and Thompson’s partnership resulted in a remarkable record of 473-193, making their duo one of the most successful in NBA history.
As Curry’s future with the Warriors remains a key topic, the franchise and its fans hope to see their star player continue his legacy in Golden State.
