The Buffalo Bills’ preseason opener revealed significant concerns, particularly regarding their backup quarterback situation. Despite the fact that preseason games often warrant measured reactions, one glaring issue emerged: the Bills lack a reliable option behind their star quarterback, Josh Allen.
In the game, Mitch Trubisky and Shane Buechele struggled significantly, combining for a subpar performance. They completed just 16 of 28 passes for a total of 135 yards and an interception, while also being sacked eight times. Neither quarterback managed a passer rating above 68, and their inconsistent play underscored the Bills’ vulnerability if Allen were to miss time due to injury.
Given these struggles, it’s clear that Buffalo needs to explore other options to solidify their quarterback depth chart. One potential solution lies in free agent Ryan Tannehill. Surprisingly still available, Tannehill offers a blend of experience and past success that could make him an ideal backup for Allen.
Tannehill, who previously played for the Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans, has a track record of success in the NFL. From 2019 to 2021, he was considered one of the better quarterbacks in the league, throwing for 76 touchdowns and rushing for 18 more during that period. He earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2019 and played a key role in leading the Titans to the AFC Championship Game that same year.
Although Tannehill’s performance has declined somewhat over the past two seasons, he still possesses the skills and experience to be one of the top backup quarterbacks in the league. His playing style is similar to that of Allen, with the ability to make deep throws and use his mobility to create plays in the running game. This similarity would allow Tannehill to seamlessly step into the Bills’ offensive system if needed.
For Bills fans, the addition of Tannehill as Allen’s backup would provide much-needed reassurance. His presence on the roster would be a significant upgrade over the current options, giving Buffalo a more dependable safety net should Allen ever be sidelined. As the Bills aim to compete at the highest level, ensuring stability at the quarterback position is crucial, and bringing in a seasoned veteran like Tannehill could be the solution they need.
