The Los Angeles Dodgers have called up Edgardo Henriquez, a powerful reliever, from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Henriquez, known for his high-velocity fastball, was seen at Dodger Stadium ahead of the team’s series against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday. Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic first reported the news, which was later confirmed by Dodgers manager Dave Roberts before the official team announcement.

In a corresponding roster move, the Dodgers optioned pitcher Ben Casparius to make space for Henriquez on the active 28-man roster. Additionally, to fit Henriquez on the 40-man roster, Gavin Stone was transferred to the 60-day injured list, effectively ending his season.

Henriquez has been impressive at Triple-A Oklahoma City this season, posting a 1-0 record with a 2.84 ERA across 14 games. Over 12.2 innings, the 22-year-old has struck out 18 batters while issuing 10 walks. Notably, his fastball has been clocked at a remarkable 103.5 mph, potentially setting a franchise record for the fastest pitch if he can replicate it in the majors.

Henriquez’s 2024 season has been a story of rapid progression. He began the year in Single-A with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes before quickly moving up the ranks. After a promotion to the Class-A Great Lakes Loons in May, he spent June in Double-A with the Tulsa Drillers, and by August, he had reached Triple-A. His rise is especially notable given that he missed the entire 2023 season due to Tommy John surgery.

Throughout the season, Henriquez has shown improvement in his command, with his strike rate increasing from 57% in April to 63.7% by August. This improvement in control has allowed him to limit opposing hitters to a .188 batting average. Despite being a right-handed pitcher, Henriquez has been even more effective against left-handed batters.

The call-up offers Henriquez an opportunity to showcase his talent at the major league level. His combination of velocity and improved control could provide the Dodgers with a valuable asset in their bullpen as they gear up for the postseason.
