The Detroit Red Wings are exploring ways to end their playoff drought, and one trade suggestion has them acquiring a Stanley Cup-winning defenseman. A user on PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool proposed a trade where the Red Wings would acquire Jack Johnson from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Olli Maatta.
In this one-for-one swap, Detroit would bring in Johnson, a veteran defenseman who signed a one-year, $775,000 deal with the Blue Jackets this offseason. Johnson, who won the Stanley Cup in 2022 with the Colorado Avalanche, could serve as a mentor for younger players while providing depth as a sixth or seventh defenseman. Throughout his NHL career, Johnson has played in 1,187 games, tallying 77 goals and 259 assists.
In return, Columbus would receive Maatta, who is entering the final year of his two-year, $6 million contract. Maatta would likely replace Johnson on the Blue Jackets’ blue line, adding offensive capability. If Columbus is not in playoff contention, Maatta could also be used as a trade asset at the deadline.
Johnson, who spent seven seasons with Columbus after being traded there in 2012, was eager to return to the team and the city, where he enjoys living with his family. Comfortable in various roles, Johnson brings valuable experience to the Blue Jackets’ roster, excelling in both power-play and penalty-killing situations.
Meanwhile, the Red Wings, focused on improving their defense for the 2024-25 season, have made several key moves, including signing goalie Cam Talbot and defenseman Erik Gustafsson. General Manager Steve Yzerman emphasized the need for a stronger defensive team, and acquiring Johnson could contribute to that goal by adding a player skilled in blocking shots and penalty killing.
The Red Wings open their 2024-25 NHL season at home on October 10 against the Pittsburgh Penguins, while the Blue Jackets start their season on the road against the Minnesota Wild.
