Even though Jerdarrian Devontae (JD) Davison’s appearance lasted only five minutes, it was impressive. Despite playing little in the final preseason game, the 2022 second round pick is still with the team on a two-way contract for the third consecutive year. He made sure to leave a lasting impression on Joe Mazzulla and the coaching staff.
The Celtics were behind by nine points when Davison entered the game, but he changed the mood right away. Davison made a layup after deflecting a pass in the defensive end of the court.
Since leaving Alabama, one of his numerous talents has been pushing the ball on the break. When Davison has the ball in his hands and is moving at full speed, few players are faster than him. Even though he was surrounded by Toronto players, Davison was able to leap quickly enough to get the ball on the backboard before they could block his shot during the layup. With 3:49 remaining, the basket brought the score down to four.
Then, with less than three minutes remaining and down seven, JD demonstrated his improved shooting confidence by making a three-pointer and drawing a foul.
Then, on consecutive possessions, Davison made 3-of-4 free throws by using his quickness and expertise to get to the hoop and draw a couple of fouls.
With less than 30 seconds left in the game, Boston was trailing by two points. JD Davison received the inbound ball and made a step-back three-pointer to give Boston a momentary lead. It was the biggest shot of the game.
The game was obviously won by JD, even though Boston lost in the end. Joe Mazzulla is a sucker for having an abundance of tools, and Davison possesses a special set of abilities. Due to his exceptional speed and ability to make three-pointers at a respectable rate, Mazzulla might find a place for him on days when other players are rested or sidelined due to injuries.
Davison’s inability to control his game and his turnovers have been his major critics. He can continue honing his offensive skills and be prepared for days when he is called up to Boston because he will be spending time in Maine.
Just this month, Davison turned 22. During the offseason, there was speculation as to whether or not Davison would return to Boston or look for a new chance elsewhere. Davison was one of the top G League players last season, and Brad Stevens and the front office crew managed to get him back.
