NFL Under Fire Following Missed Call in Vikings-Rams Game
The NFL is facing criticism after a controversial missed call ended the Minnesota Vikings’ game against the Los Angeles Rams. The Vikings, who had been undefeated just a week ago, have experienced a string of setbacks, including the loss of their left tackle Christian Darrisaw to a season-ending injury.
Vikings Coach Praises Players Despite Setbacks
Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell praised his players’ performance in their recent win over the New York Jets, despite the team’s challenges. The Vikings are now dealing with the devastating news that Christian Darrisaw will undergo surgery to repair torn ligaments in his left knee.
Christian Darrisaw’s Injury
Darrisaw’s injury occurred during Thursday night’s loss to the Rams. He tore his ACL and MCL when safety Jaylen McCollough accidentally rolled into the back of his leg during a tackle attempt. Darrisaw was immediately placed on injured reserve, opening up a spot on the active roster for tight end T.J. Hockenson, who is returning from his own ACL and MCL injuries.
“He’d really developed into one of our core leaders, clearly one of our offensive pillars that we have leaned on a lot,” said O’Connell. “It’s going to be a significant loss, but we’ve all got to do a little more, and it starts with me.”
The Impact of Darrisaw’s Absence
Darrisaw’s absence is a significant blow to the Vikings’ offensive line. He had become one of the best left tackles in the NFL, known for his protection against top edge defenders and his strength in run blocking. Darrisaw signed a four-year contract extension worth over $100 million at the beginning of training camp, underscoring his importance to the team.
Veteran David Quessenberry replaced Darrisaw after the injury, but the Vikings may need to acquire another tackle. Rookie Walter Rouse, a sixth-round pick from Oklahoma, is the only other tackle on the active roster besides starting right tackle Brian O’Neill. O’Connell mentioned that Rouse would be considered for the new lineup, and guard Dalton Risner, who has been sidelined with a back injury, is expected to return soon. Current left guard Blake Brandel, who started three games at left tackle last year, is also an option.
Kirk Cousins’ Injury Concerns
Quarterback Kirk Cousins has also raised concerns among Vikings fans after an incident involving his children put his injured Achilles in jeopardy. Despite these worries, Cousins remains focused on leading the team through this challenging period.
Vikings’ Recent Performance
The Vikings were the last unbeaten team in the NFC before their recent losses to the Detroit Lions and the Rams. They now have a record of 5-2 and are looking to bounce back as they host the Indianapolis Colts on November 3rd.
Moving Forward
Coach O’Connell emphasized the need for the team to step up in the wake of Darrisaw’s injury. The Vikings’ ability to adapt and overcome these setbacks will be crucial as they aim to maintain their competitive edge in the NFC. With key players returning from injury and new lineup adjustments on the horizon, the team is determined to stay resilient and focused on their goals for the season.
