The Philadelphia Phillies are poised for a major offseason shake-up following their 95-67 record and first National League East title since 2011. However, their hopes for postseason success were dashed with an early exit, prompting speculation about roster changes. Among the potential moves is the acquisition of Houston Astros star Alex Bregman, a two-time All-Star, and World Series champion.
Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski has expressed a willingness to explore all options to improve the roster for 2025. Speaking on October 15, he stated, “We have a lot of good players… Sometimes you trade good players for good players.” His comments suggest the team may pursue high-impact trades or free-agent signings to address weaknesses.
Third base appears to be a focal point for change. While Alec Bohm had a productive 2024 season with a career-high 97 RBIs and his first All-Star selection, his struggles in the National League Division Series against the New York Mets—posting a .220 OPS in 14 plate appearances—have fueled trade rumors. Should Bohm be moved, the Phillies would need to fill the vacancy at the hot corner.
Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer has identified the Phillies as a strong candidate to sign Bregman in free agency. Other teams, including the Houston Astros, Toronto Blue Jays, and Detroit Tigers, are also potential suitors. Bregman’s extensive postseason experience—99 playoff games since his 2016 debut—and two championship rings make him a highly sought-after asset.
Landing Bregman would require a significant financial commitment, as The Athletic’s Tim Britton projects the 30-year-old third baseman to command a seven-year, $189 million contract. However, such an investment could be worthwhile for the Phillies as they aim to secure their first World Series title since 2008. Swapping Bohm for Bregman would represent a clear upgrade, reinforcing Philadelphia’s infield with a proven performer under pressure.
With high expectations for the 2025 season, the Phillies appear ready to make bold moves, and adding Bregman could be a game-changer for the team’s championship aspirations.
