Juan Soto has signed a record-setting $765 million contract with the New York Mets, marking a significant shift from his previous team, the New York Yankees. The 15-year deal, reported by MLB.com, ESPN, and The Athletic, includes a $75 million signing bonus and no deferred payments. The agreement will be finalized once Soto completes his physical.
The contract features an opt-out clause after five years, which, if declined, could boost the total value to over $800 million, raising Soto’s annual salary from $51 million to $55 million. At 26 years old, Soto is coming off a stellar season with the Yankees, where he posted a .288 batting average, a career-high 41 home runs, and 109 RBIs in 157 games. He also led the American League with 128 runs and earned his fourth All-Star nod.
Soto’s MLB journey began with the Washington Nationals, where he debuted in 2018. Known for his exceptional hitting, he won the National League batting title in 2020 with a .351 average and finished second in MVP voting in 2021. During his career, Soto has accumulated 201 home runs and 592 RBIs over seven seasons, also leading MLB in walks three times.
He joined the Yankees in a 2023 trade from the San Diego Padres, who had acquired him from the Nationals in 2022.
Now, Soto is set to bolster a Mets lineup that includes stars like Francisco Lindor, Mark Vientos, and Brandon Nimmo. The team’s rotation has also been strengthened by free-agent acquisitions, including former Yankees closer Clay Holmes and pitcher Frankie Montas. The Mets, who finished last season with an 89-73 record and reached the National League Championship Series, aim to capture their first World Series title since 1986.
