After securing Juan Soto with a historic 15-year, $765 million contract, the New York Mets have shifted their offseason focus to strengthening their pitching rotation. While Soto’s acquisition addresses their offensive needs, the Mets still have financial flexibility to pursue another marquee signing—potentially targeting ace Corbin Burnes.
Addressing a Thin Rotation
The Mets’ pitching depth has been impacted by key departures, including Sean Manaea, Luis Severino, and Jose Quintana. Although Kodai Senga has shown promise as an ace, his injury history raises concerns, leaving the team in need of another top-tier arm. Burnes, a 29-year-old free agent, stands out as a potential solution. In his recent season with the Baltimore Orioles, Burnes delivered an impressive performance, posting a 2.92 ERA over 194.1 innings and showcasing a cutter that dominates hitters. His ability to induce ground balls makes him an ideal fit for Citi Field’s dimensions.
Financial Muscle
Under the ownership of Steve Cohen, the Mets have demonstrated a willingness to spend heavily to build a championship-caliber roster. Even with Soto’s massive contract, structured over 15 years without deferred payments, the Mets have room for another significant investment. Burnes is expected to command a deal worth approximately $250 million over six or seven years, aligning with the Mets’ aggressive strategy.
Strengthening the Pitching Core
Adding Burnes would create a formidable pairing with Senga at the top of the rotation, providing stability and reducing reliance on the bullpen. Recent signings like Frankie Montas and former Yankees closer Clay Holmes further bolster the staff, but Burnes’ presence could transform the rotation into one of baseball’s most balanced.
With these moves, the Mets aim to position themselves as a contender capable of competing at the highest level in the upcoming season.
