Alex Bregman’s future with the Houston Astros is now all but over, following a series of moves by the organization that signal the end of his tenure. The two-time All-Star and World Series champion’s agent, Scott Boras, recently voiced dissatisfaction with the Astros’ management, expressing frustration over their handling of Bregman’s potential free agency.
The Astros made two significant moves that essentially ruled out a Bregman return. They acquired corner infielder Isaac Paredes in the trade that sent star outfielder Kyle Tucker to another team and followed that by signing first baseman Christian Walker to a three-year, $60 million contract. These additions solidify Houston’s 2025 infield, with Walker at first base and Paredes taking over at third, effectively pushing Bregman out of the picture.
Scott Boras, Bregman’s agent, didn’t hold back in his critique, telling The Athletic’s Chandler Rome, “Over time, teams learn if you’re running from leadership and talent, you’re running from the ultimate goal.” While the Astros’ moves may enhance offensive production in 2025, Boras’ comments suggest Bregman’s value lies beyond mere statistics.
Known for his leadership and baseball IQ, Bregman has been a cornerstone of Houston’s dynasty. Teammate and franchise legend Jose Altuve has praised him as a vital leader, and his contributions go beyond his performance at the plate. In 2024, Bregman played a key role in mentoring young pitcher Hunter Brown, and his guidance during mound visits became a staple of his presence at third base. These intangibles have been central to his argument for a lucrative free-agent contract, but Houston was unwilling to meet the high price, reportedly near or exceeding $200 million.
With Houston’s infield now restructured, featuring Walker and Paredes, the organization is moving forward. Meanwhile, Bregman is left searching for his next team, a decision that may not come until January. Boras and Bregman will undoubtedly seek a deal that recognizes his leadership, experience, and championship pedigree, even if it won’t be with the Astros.
