As head coach Zac Taylor continues to rotate his coaching staff’s defensive members, two veteran Cincinnati Bengals coaches have been removed of their positions.
The Bengals fired defensive quality control coach Louie Cioffi and senior defensive assistant Mark Duffner, according to WLWT’s Charlie Clifford.
Duffner was a member of Taylor’s first staff in 2019 and returned to the Bengals as a senior defensive assistant. He served as the team’s defensive coordinator from 2001 to 2002 and as its linebackers coach from 1997 to 2000. His catchphrase, “They Gotta Play Us,” which became popular during the team’s 2021 run to the Super Bowl, summed up his most recent time with the team.
In 1997, Cioffi made his Bengals debut with Duffner, and when the latter was promoted to DC, Cioffi worked under him. In 2021, he rejoined the team as a quality control coach after remaining until 2010 as an assistant defensive backs coach.
Clifford points out that the Bengals have now fired five defensive coaches, including linebackers coach James Bettcher, defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, and defensive line coach Marion Hobby. With a new DC finally arriving, it was unlikely that Duffner and Cioffi would be kept, but their combined 30 years of coaching experience in the city made them standout exits.
At least two applicants have been interviewed by the Bengals to replace Anarumo, and the name of former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus is apparently “involved” in the current search. On Monday, Anarumo, Hobby, and Bettcher were formally dismissed.
