The Phoenix Suns rallied to defeat the visiting Charlotte Hornets, 120-113, on Sunday night. Devin Booker scored 30 points and handed out 8 assists, while Kevin Durant added 27 points, 8 boards, and 5 assists.
Phoenix scored the last nine points of the game to secure their third consecutive win, their first in almost two months, with the help of Bradley Beal’s 15 points and six assists.
After playing 13+ minutes in the first half, Grayson Allen sat out the second due to left knee discomfort, despite scoring 13 points. With 11 points apiece, Ryan Dunn and Oso Ighodaro led the team.
Durant has a streak of fifteen games in which he has scored 20 points or more.
The Hornets, who have dropped 19 of their last 21 games, were led by LaMelo Ball’s 25 points, 11 assists, 6 boards, and 3 steals. With 24 points and 16 boards, Mark Williams had his best game of the season.
After Tuesday’s 115-104 home victory over the Suns, Charlotte had not played in a game until this one. The Los Angeles wildfires forced the Hornets to reschedule their trip games against the Lakers (Thursday) and the Clippers (Saturday).
The Hornets extended their lead to 12 points with to 21 points from Miles Bridges and 19 points and 6 assists from Brandon Miller.
The Hornets shot 44.6% and converted 15.0% of their 3-point attempts.
The Suns’ field goal percentage was 48.3%, with 17 of 41 attempts coming from beyond the arc.
After falling behind by nine points with under seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Suns went on a 23-7 rally to win the game.
A 14-4 run got underway when Durant scored in a row. At 3 minutes and 3 seconds left in the game, Phoenix took a 111-110 lead, which Durant capped off with a jump shot.
With 2:18 remaining, Miller restored Charlotte’s lead with a 3-pointer. The Suns took a 118-113 lead with 40.7 seconds remaining in the game thanks to two dunks by Oso Ighodaro and a three-pointer by Royce O’Neale.
The final 9-0 run was capped off by two free throws converted by Booker with 28.2 seconds remaining.
At the break, Williams had set new personal bests for the season with 22 points and 13 rebounds. During the half, which finished in a scoreless draw, he converted nine out of ten shots.
Nick Smith Jr. shot a three-pointer with 2:12 remaining in the third quarter, extending the Hornets’ lead to 96-86. The Hornets had scored the last six points of the third quarter to grab a 68-62 lead.
When the last stanza began, Charlotte was up, 98-93. After Bridges scored with 6 minutes and fifty-eight seconds left, the Hornets led 106–97. The Suns then came storming back.
With 2:11 remaining in the first half, Phoenix took the lead for the first time on a three-point play by Allen, putting them up 57-56.
