Alex Bregman’s Future Uncertain as Astros Keep Door Open, but Red Sox Loom as Suitors
As Alex Bregman remains on the free agent market, speculation about his next destination continues to build. While the Houston Astros have expressed interest in bringing back their two-time All-Star third baseman, reports suggest the Boston Red Sox could emerge as a serious contender for his services.
Astros coach Joe Espada recently told FOX 26 Houston’s Nate Griffin that the team’s “arms are still open” for Bregman’s return. Houston previously extended a six-year, $156 million offer, per MLB.com, and that proposal could still be available. However, On SI’s Patrick McAvoy predicts Bregman will instead land a “nine-figure deal” with Boston.
“Bregman makes too much sense for Boston, and manager Alex Cora has made it clear how much he loves him,” McAvoy wrote. “Maybe the Red Sox are just playing hardball. Boston needs to add a big piece, and Bregman easily could be that guy—but it will cost nine figures.”
Bregman’s Impact and Potential Fit in Boston
Over nine seasons, Bregman has built an impressive resume with a career slash line of .272/.366/.483, along with a Silver Slugger and Gold Glove Award. In the postseason, he has been a consistent contributor, logging 88 hits and 63 runs in 99 playoff games. Defensively, his .968 career fielding percentage makes him one of the most reliable third basemen in baseball.
If the Red Sox sign Bregman, it could trigger a defensive shift, with franchise cornerstone Rafael Devers potentially moving to first base. McAvoy believes the fit is too strong to ignore, saying, “There have been too many rumors for the Red Sox to let Bregman go. If he signs elsewhere, there will be turmoil across Red Sox Nation.”
Astros’ Backup Plan if Bregman Departs
Should Bregman leave for a bigger deal, Houston will likely turn to newly acquired Isaac Paredes at third base. However, if Bregman doesn’t receive a more lucrative offer, the Astros’ standing contract proposal remains an option for a potential reunion.
For now, all eyes are on Bregman’s next move, with both the Astros and Red Sox waiting to see how the market unfolds.
