Steelers QB Trade Target Receives Troubling Update Amid Aaron Rodgers Watch
With only Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson currently on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback roster, the team is actively searching for a new starter. Among the names linked to Pittsburgh was Atlanta Falcons QB Kirk Cousins. However, according to NFL insider James Palmer, Cousins is no longer a serious option for the Steelers.
“The Steelers showed early interest and made some inquiries, but from what I’m hearing, Arthur Smith—now Pittsburgh’s offensive coordinator and previously the Falcons’ head coach—still has connections in Atlanta and got some insight into Cousins’ current form and performance,” Palmer said. “That seems to have cooled Pittsburgh’s interest.”
There are several reasons the Steelers might pass on Cousins, especially as they continue to anxiously await a decision from Aaron Rodgers regarding a potential move to Pittsburgh. As Mike Fisher noted via AllSteelers.com, “The idea that Smith tapped into his Atlanta contacts and came away with negative feedback about Cousins? That’s pretty damning.”
Cousins struggled in the 2024 season, appearing to still be hampered by the Achilles injury he sustained in 2023. He finished with just over 3,500 passing yards, 18 touchdowns, and a troubling 16 interceptions—far from his peak performance.
Meanwhile, Rodgers remains the top veteran quarterback linked to the Steelers. While contract negotiations are still ongoing, he currently appears to be the more viable target compared to Cousins.
