Seahawks Linebacker Uchenna Nwosu Agrees to Reworked Contract, Creating Cap Space for Seattle
SEATTLE — Uchenna Nwosu, the Seattle Seahawks’ outside linebacker, has agreed to a reworked contract that will help the team free up significant cap space, multiple reports confirmed on Thursday. The move comes as the Seahawks continue to make a series of offseason moves to bolster their roster and position themselves for future success.
At 28 years old, Nwosu had been set to earn $26.5 million over the final two years of his contract. However, after renegotiating his deal, Nwosu will now make $19.51 million, which includes $8 million in 2025. The adjusted contract will see him count $11.85 million against the salary cap, allowing the Seahawks to save approximately $9.4 million.
Despite the salary reduction, Nwosu’s new deal includes the potential for him to earn up to $5 million in incentives and escalators. These incentives will be based on his performance, including sacks, playing time, and the Seahawks’ playoff qualification. This structure ensures Nwosu remains motivated to contribute to the team’s success on the field, with financial rewards tied to key performance metrics.
The Seahawks have been active in free agency this offseason, bringing in several high-profile players to strengthen their squad. Quarterback Sam Darnold, defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence, and wide receiver Cooper Kupp are among the key additions. With these significant investments, Seattle is looking to build a competitive team that can challenge for playoff contention.
However, injuries have hindered Nwosu’s availability in recent seasons. After a strong 2022 campaign in which he started all 17 regular-season games, Nwosu faced multiple setbacks in 2023 and 2024. He suffered a season-ending pectoral muscle tear in October 2023, and a sprained MCL and severe quad strain further limited his playing time in 2024. As a result, he played in just six games in each of the past two seasons.
In 2024, Nwosu made two starts and recorded 14 tackles and one sack and had limited impact due to his injuries. Despite these setbacks, he remains an important part of Seattle’s defensive scheme, as evidenced by his solid track record over the years.
Nwosu’s career stats highlight his potential and versatility. Over his tenure in the NFL, he has racked up 228 tackles, 27.5 sacks, 38 tackles for loss, 82 quarterback hits, one interception, eight forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries. In total, he has appeared in 91 regular-season games (50 starts) split between the Los Angeles Chargers (2018-21) and the Seahawks.
The Chargers selected Nwosu in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft after a productive college career at the University of Southern California. During his time with the Chargers, he established himself as a reliable pass rusher and an all-around defensive presence. Though his time with Seattle has been marred by injuries, Nwosu’s talent is undeniable, and the team hopes he can return to form in 2025.
As the Seahawks continue to adjust their roster and salary cap, Nwosu’s contract restructure helps provide additional financial flexibility. With the team adding several key pieces in free agency and hoping for improved health from Nwosu, Seattle will be aiming to compete at a high level in the upcoming season.
