Red Sox Prospect Roman Anthony Dealing with Soreness After Exiting WooSox Game
CLEVELAND — Red Sox top prospect Roman Anthony left Triple-A Worcester’s game Friday after fouling a ball off the top of his foot during an 8-3 loss to Syracuse.
Though he initially stayed in the game, Anthony exited after five innings.
“I read about it in the report,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said before Boston’s Saturday doubleheader against the Guardians. “It was sore throughout the game, so he came out.”
Cora mentioned that the team would likely have a clearer update later.
Saturday’s WooSox game was postponed due to rain, with Worcester and Syracuse now scheduled for a doubleheader on Sunday.
“I think he’s OK,” WooSox manager Chad Tracy told reporters, including WEEI’s Rob Bradford, after Friday’s game. “They’re going to evaluate him. He fouled a ball off the top of his foot but kept playing. As the game went on, it stiffened up, so we made a precautionary move to take him out. I believe he’s day-to-day, but they’ll need to check him out to be sure.”
Anthony, ranked the No. 2 prospect in baseball by Baseball America, has been off to a strong start with Worcester, slashing .313/.451/.588 with a 1.039 OPS. Over 23 games, he’s recorded five home runs, five doubles, a triple, 14 RBIs, 21 runs scored, 21 walks, and 21 strikeouts.
