Former Steelers Cornerback and Return Specialist Lupe Sanchez Dies at 63
Lupe Sanchez, a former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback and kick returner, has passed away at the age of 63, according to a Facebook tribute shared by his friend Keith Korsgarden.
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lupe Sanchez, a beloved member of the Visalia community who left us earlier today,” Korsgarden wrote. “Lupe was not only a great friend to many — including all of us at the restaurant — but also a shining example of kindness, strength, and perseverance.”
Sanchez was born in Visalia, California, to Mexican immigrant parents and stayed close to home for college, starring at UCLA from 1979 to 1983. He recorded 13 interceptions during his collegiate career — fifth-most in school history.
Though originally drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 1984 supplemental draft, Sanchez was released before being picked up by the Steelers. He played three seasons in Pittsburgh (1986–1988), starting nine games and recording four interceptions, including a pick-six. He also made an impact on special teams, logging 778 yards on 35 kick returns.
In addition to his NFL career, Sanchez also played in the USFL for the Arizona Wranglers and Orlando Renegades.
