Sergio Ramos’ potential return to the Spain team has not been ruled out by head coach Luis de la Fuente.
The 37-year-old is back at Sevilla after his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expired this summer, moving back to his childhood club on a free transfer.
Ramos has played for Spain 180 times, earning two European Championships and a World Cup during his stint with La Roja. He holds the record for most appearances in Spain’s history.
After new head coach De la Fuente made it apparent that the former Real Madrid captain was not in his plans, the center-back made his international retirement announcement at the end of February.
Ramos acknowledged that he was open to playing for Spain again when he was introduced as a Sevilla player.
“I decided to withdraw from international football a year ago. Who knows, if the situation (about a potential return) arises? Everyone is aware of how important it is for me to represent my nation. The defender questioned on Wednesday, “Why not if the situation changes?
During his news conference to discuss Friday’s Euro 2024 qualifier match against Georgia, De la Fuente was questioned about Ramos’ remarks.
When asked specifically about Ramos on Thursday, the head coach stated that he will always “pick the best squad” and would not rule out a comeback.
“At all times, I strive to select the best squad. I’m currently concentrating on the Georgia game. What will happen following Tuesday (against Cyprus) is unknown to me. In October, I’ll reevaluate the situation, De la Fuente stated.
Next week, Spain will play Cyprus in a Euro 2024 qualifying match, and La Roja is under pressure to pick up two victories after falling to Scotland 2-0 in their previous Group A match.
If Lamine Yamal plays against either Georgia or Cyprus, he will break the record for the youngest player in Spain history. De la Fuente also spoke about Barcelona’s 16-year-old attacker at his news conference.
“Watching Lamine Yamal on TV, he seemed like a very good guy. But after working with him, I believe he’s significantly improved,” he told the press.
“He’s here on his own merit, and he’s a really crucial player for us right now. I have complete faith in him. He’s a superb player, in my opinion.
When Spain plays Georgia, the attacker will be 16 years and 57 days old, and he is attempting to surpass the mark presently held by club teammate Gavi.
