Milan Icon Demetrio Albertini Backs outstanding star to Take Up Captain’s Responsibility

The statements of Rafael Leao in his recent interview, in which he firmly hinted at a wish to stay for a few more years, were surely welcomed by the higher administration of AC Milan.

Some fans and members of the media chastised Leao for passing up a big chance against Newcastle United in the Champions League group stage opening last week, opting for a back heel instead of a standard shot.

He responded admirably, however, scoring the game-winning goal against Verona on Saturday, giving him three goals in his previous three Serie A appearances.

Then, yesterday, an interview with GQ Portugal was published in which he stated how much he enjoys living in Milan and even stated that he sees himself there for many more years.

On the eve of the game against Cagliari, Sky journalist Peppe Di Stefano provided a report from Milanello, where he commented about Leao, with his words carried by Radio Rossonera.

“Leao? We’re talking about a man who has already scored three goals in the last three games this season. He is one of our league’s strongest players, if not the strongest… a decisive player,” he remarked.

“Comparisons have been made and will be made over time, but I think Milan should enjoy this player. Yesterday he spoke saying some wonderful things about Milan. He specified that he renewed his contract because he wants to stay at the Rossoneri for a long time, he wants to win the Champions League here.

“This obviously delighted the club and the entire Rossoneri environment.” Leao may not play tomorrow, but we were at yesterday’s practice and are looking forward to this afternoon’s.

“I sympathize with Stefano Pioli because I imagine it’s always difficult to keep out the strongest, but it’s also obvious that you have to use up your energy because you don’t want to risk anything in terms of physical stress.”

“Not mental because playing is good for everything, but I repeat there’s it’s the possibility that tomorrow he and Giroud might not start from the beginning.”

Milan Icon Backs Leao to Take Up Captain’s Responsibility

Former Rossoneri icon Demetrio Albertini has backed Rafael Leao to succeed as the club’s captain in the future. According to Albertini, expectations placed on the Portuguese winger’s head put him in a position of great responsibility.

The former Rossoneri midfielder spoke to Sky Italia (via MilanNews) on the occasion of the Cupra Ghost Padel event, specifically about Leao’s captaincy hopes.
Leao led Milan to victory over Hellas Verona at San Siro for the first time in his career. He was totally responsible for the victory, since he scored on his own in the first half.
With both Davide Calabria and Theo Hernandez declared out of the match, Stefano Pioli selected Leao to take over as captain. Milan will play Claudio Ranieri’s Cagliari away next as they look to cut the gap on local rivals Inter at the top of Serie A.
