Adam Armstrong says the Southampton dressing room are buzzing with their performance in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Leeds United at St Mary’s.
Saints got off to the perfect start after Adam Armstrong opened the scoring inside the first two minutes. Kyle Walker-Peters’ excellent pass behind the Leeds defence found the Southampton captain who produced an excellent chipped finish over Islan Meslier from a tight angle.
Will Smallbone then got his first goal of the season with a guided, first-time finish from inside the box on the half-hour mark before, four minutes later, Armstrong fired home his second in off Pascal Struijk from a similar angle to his first.
Daniel Farke required a response from his Leeds team in the second half and got it on the hour mark as Struijk pulled one back from a corner after Southampton failed to clear their lines.
But the visitors couldn’t build on their goal, with Southampton seeing the game out well to register a much-needed three points to get their season back on track after four straight losses.
“It’s massive,” Armstrong told Sky Sports of the result. “The last four results haven’t been good enough. We worked hard on the training ground this week and the work rate today was great. We knew it would be hard in the second half and we deserved it today.”
Asked how important it was to get the first goal early on, Armstrong added: “Massive. In every game, the first goal sets the tempo and it did today. Three points are huge for us and the lads are buzzing.”
