According to a report by journalist Lewis Cox from Express & Star, Alex Mowatt is being considered as a potential replacement for the injured John Swift in a more advanced midfield role at West Brom this season. Swift has been in excellent form, scoring his sixth Championship goal of the season, but is now sidelined with a calf injury, which means that manager Carlos Corberan must explore other options, starting with the game against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday, October 21.
Cox believes that the versatile midfielder Mowatt, who typically plays in a central midfield position, could step in to fill the void left by Swift. Alongside Mowatt, players like Okay Yokuslu, Jayson Molumby, and Nathaniel Chalobah are competing for midfield roles.
Losing Swift is a significant setback for West Brom, and with the possibility of him being out for up to six weeks, there’s increased pressure on the rest of the team to contribute goals at The Hawthorns. Additionally, summer signings Josh Maja and Jeremy Sarmiento are dealing with their own injury issues, which further complicates the team’s attacking options and forces Corberan to find solutions to maintain goal-scoring performance.
While Mowatt initially started the season on the sidelines, he has since worked his way into contention and has proven himself as a valuable option in central midfield, a position where the team already has reasonable depth. Moving him forward into a more advanced role would be a bit of a risk, as it could impact his confidence and development negatively if things don’t go well. However, Mowatt possesses the necessary skills and passing ability to make an impact in that position, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see Corberan opt for this strategy against Plymouth.
