Tony Mowbray is surprisingly optimistic about Dan Neil’s absence for the upcoming weekend. During a recent press conference, the Sunderland manager expressed his belief that it might actually benefit the young midfielder to miss the match against Stoke City. This is a notable shift in sentiment considering that Dan Neil had been a pivotal player, starting in all eleven of Sunderland’s Championship matches this season until he received a controversial red card for using inappropriate language in the game against Middlesbrough.

As a result of the red card, Dan Neil is now suspended for one match, meaning he won’t be available for the upcoming game against Alex Neil’s team. Sunderland faces a challenge in finding a suitable replacement for Neil in their lineup at the bet365 Stadium. Nonetheless, Mowbray has pointed out that this unexpected break could be advantageous for the 21-year-old.

Mowbray conveyed his thoughts to the media, saying, “I told him today, looking forward to a rest. It’s a positive thing for him because this week involves three games. It’s beneficial for a young player to occasionally relax, watch the game, and be prepared for the next match three days later when he’ll be needed.”

Sunderland will face a tough test next week when they play against Leicester City in the Midlands and then host Norwich at Wearside four days later.

There is a concern about who can adequately step into Dan Neil’s shoes. He has been a significant contributor, with two goals and two assists this season. The Black Cats are pinning their hopes on Pierre Ekwah, a French player, who appears to be the closest in quality to Neil. Sunderland is lacking in defensive midfielders and wants to avoid being as exposed as they were against Middlesbrough.

The team should focus on the upcoming match against Alex Neil’s Stoke and aim for a comfortable victory, with the expectation of welcoming Dan Neil back into the squad for the subsequent game against Leicester.
