Newcastle United open talks with £150,000-a-week treble winner

Newcastle United has initiated discussions with 27-year-old Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, as reported by TEAMtalk. The Premier League champions are willing to part ways with Phillips, who has fallen out of favor. The Magpies are currently in talks with the English international, aiming to persuade him to join their ranks. During the summer transfer window, Newcastle signed 23-year-old Sandro Tonali from AC Milan, who quickly adapted to the Premier League but could now face a lengthy ban due to his involvement in an illegal betting scandal. Consequently, Newcastle is in the market for a quality defensive midfielder, with Kalvin Phillips being a prime target.

Phillips has encountered difficulties since his £45 million transfer to Manchester City and may benefit from a fresh start. His potential arrival at Newcastle could be significant in the latter half of the season.

The possibility of his departure from Manchester City in January remains uncertain. Phillips currently earns £150,000 per week at Manchester City, and the Premier League champions may seek to offload his wages as they have been unable to maximize his performance for several months. A move to Newcastle could provide him with an opportunity to regain his best form.

Previously known as one of the league’s top defensive midfielders during his time at Leeds United, Phillips would contribute much-needed quality and depth to the Newcastle midfield. As the Magpies compete in the UEFA Champions League, they require top-tier players in their squad. If Tonali is banned for an extended period, securing a quality defensive midfielder becomes imperative. Phillips’ familiarity with the Premier League suggests he could make an immediate impact at St. James’ Park. It will be intriguing to observe if the two clubs can come to an agreement in the following months to complete the transfer.
