According to Southampton manager Russell Martin, the club has not yet engaged in discussions regarding a new contract with Stuart Armstrong. Armstrong’s current contract with the team, which competes in the Championship, will expire at the end of June 2024, posing the risk of losing him for free next summer.

Armstrong, 31 years old, was a member of the Southampton squad that experienced relegation from the Premier League last season. They are now aiming to secure a swift return to the top flight.

Martin recently provided an update on the future of one of his key players, as reported by the Daily Echo, stating, “There hasn’t been any dialogue about extending his contract at this time. I believe Stuey’s primary focus is on playing football.”

He further acknowledged the challenging period Armstrong has faced in the past 18 months to two years, emphasizing, “He has not enjoyed it very much – I don’t think he will mind me saying that.”

Martin added, “Regarding his long-term prospects, I believe he simply wants to concentrate on playing football. He is fully committed to our team now, fully present, and focusing on day-to-day matters. I believe that’s all we can request of him, and the rest will take care of itself.”

Armstrong’s future at Southampton will likely be influenced by the league the team finds itself in during the next season. He is a valuable asset, bringing extensive experience and quality to the squad. The Scotland international, with 44 caps to his name, has made 182 appearances for the club in all competitions, contributing 21 goals, including two in the current season.

Before moving to England, Armstrong made a name for himself in the Scottish Premiership with stints at Dundee United and Celtic, where he won the league title four times, along with the Scottish Cup and League Cup.

Southampton recently secured a 2-1 victory over Hull City, thanks to a last-minute goal by Ryan Fraser. Martin’s team is scheduled to play tonight with an away game against Preston North End. The Saints currently occupy the 8th position in the table and are just outside the play-offs based on goal difference.
