Sean McVay names perfect replacement for injured QB Matthew Stafford

The Green Bay Packers could potentially face Brett Rypien as the quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday if their starting quarterback, Matthew Stafford, is unable to play due to a thumb injury.

According to The Athletic’s Jourdan Rodrigue, the Rams are considering placing Stafford on injured reserve. The decision is influenced by the upcoming chilly conditions in Green Bay and the Rams’ bye week after the game.

Matthew Stafford has been the Rams’ starting quarterback in 2023, throwing for 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions. The Rams have a 3-5 record in games where Stafford has started.

If Stafford is unable to play, the Rams will turn to Brett Rypien, who has previously been a backup quarterback for the Denver Broncos. Rypien has limited NFL experience, having thrown for 820 yards, four touchdowns, and eight interceptions in his career. His career passer rating is 62.8, which ranks relatively low in the league.

The Green Bay Packers are in need of a win as they currently have a 2-5 record and are on a four-game losing streak. While Stafford’s absence may not solve the Packers’ offensive problems, facing Rypien as the opposing quarterback could lead to a lower-scoring game. The Packers have held their opponents to an average of 20 points per game in their last three losses, suggesting that even with Rypien at the helm, the Rams-Packers matchup might be a low-scoring contest.
