Southampton midfielder Stuart Armstrong is optimistic about the impact that Ross Stewart will bring to the club’s forward line upon his return from injury later this month.
Ross Stewart, who joined Southampton from Sunderland in the summer, is yet to make his debut for the club due to an Achilles tendon injury. However, he is expected to be available for his first appearance in a Southampton shirt in the next two weeks, with the home fixture against West Bromwich Albion on November 11 being a potential target for his return, if not sooner.
Armstrong, who is an international teammate of Stewart with Scotland, believes that the summer signing will be a significant contributor to Southampton in the coming months. He noted that Stewart’s qualities, especially his height and playing style, will offer something different to the team.
Armstrong stated, “He’s only just come back, so he’s only had a couple of training sessions. Knowing him from Scotland, I know his qualities. I think he adds something different that we don’t have, with his height and the way he plays it’s a little bit different. I think he will be very important for us going forward with so many games, but he has had a tough time himself with injuries.”
Armstrong also has experience playing alongside another of Southampton’s summer signings, Ryan Fraser, who arrived on loan from Newcastle United. Fraser has made 11 appearances in the Championship and scored his first goal last month, securing a 2-1 win over Hull City.
Armstrong spoke highly of Fraser, saying, “I have known him for a long time, having played with him a lot in Scotland. He’s a team player and understands the dynamics of the squad very well. He’s got a lot of individual quality. You saw that with his finish at Hull. Big moments like that are amazing, I think the more times that happens, it becomes part of our DNA.”
