Newcastle United is reportedly competing with Chelsea for the acquisition of Sporting Lisbon defender Ousmane Diomande, who has a £70 million release clause in his contract, as per The Sun. Chelsea had previously identified the 19-year-old as a potential successor to Thiago Silva, whose contract expires at the end of the season. However, Silva might extend his stay due to his son Isago’s ongoing contract with Chelsea’s academy until 2025. Despite this, Chelsea’s defensive lineup remains strong, with options like Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile, Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, and Trevoh Chalobah.
Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea’s manager, has been relying on Silva, who has started in all 12 of the team’s Premier League games this season. Even if Silva departs, Chelsea’s defensive depth seems sufficient, unless there are injuries or tactical changes. Former Premier League manager Harry Redknapp believes Silva is Chelsea’s best player, potentially delaying the need for a new central defender. However, the possibility of Diomande moving to a new club persists as clubs express interest in the talented player.
