Jetro Willems, the former Newcastle United defender, was recently spotted at St James’ Park on what he described as a “normal day.” Willems, who initially joined Newcastle on loan from Eintracht Frankfurt in 2019, suffered an ACL injury that ended his stint prematurely. Despite brief stints at other clubs, including Greuther Fürth and Groningen, Willems’ connection with Newcastle and its fans has endured.
In a recent selfie shared on Saturday, Willems stood outside St James’ Park, referring to it as his “old office” with the hashtag #NUFC. The 29-year-old has openly expressed his interest in a permanent return to Newcastle, although the likelihood of that happening seems slim.
Coincidentally, Willems’ visit aligns with Newcastle’s current injury crisis, as left-backs Dan Burn, Matt Targett, and Lewis Hall are unavailable for the upcoming match against Chelsea.
Burn and Targett are both sidelined until early 2024 due to back and hamstring injuries, respectively, while Hall cannot play against his parent club. Currently playing for Heracles, Willems has made 11 appearances this season, with the team positioned 13th in the Dutch top flight.
