Carlisle United manager Paul Simpson said that Charlton Athletic were one of the greatest teams he had seen in League One this season.

The Addicks earned a point at Brunton Park on Saturday.

In the 54th minute, Corey Blackett-Taylor scored his sixth goal of the season to put Charlton ahead.

Former defender Sam Lavell equalised for the Cumbrians eight minutes later, scoring his first goal for the club, as the two teams shared the points.

“We have to be pleased – they are a good side,” Simpson said on Carlisle’s YouTube account.

“Let’s not kid ourselves, they’re as good as anyone we have faced this season.

“The pace, power and the way they move the ball – that’s what we have got to aspire towards.

“We have to try and get to that level.”

Lavell made 41 games for Charlton and also spent time on loan with Burton Albion before leaving permanently in the summer to join Carlisle.

“It was brilliant,” Simpson said of the goal by the 27-year-old.

“It was ironic that he scored against his former club given the number of chances he’s had for us so far.”

“At the end, when I congratulated him, he replied, ‘It’s about time.’

“But that’s the first, and it’s always the most difficult to obtain.” It will give him a great boost, and we have earned a point.”
